Comprehensive
The STOTT PILATES® Comprehensive program is intended for aspiring instructors with limited training in functional anatomy and little to no prior teaching experience. If you are not sure if the Comprehensive Track is appropriate for you, please discuss these options during your application interview. Students enrolled in this program will take the Intensive Level Courses (listed as IMP and IR on the course schedule) but will also take additional classes in functional anatomy, postural analysis and exam preparation and gain additional teaching skills through Pacific NW Pilates’ apprenticeship and mentoring program.
Functional Anatomy
This 20-hour course is for those who need to learn the basics of functional anatomy before studying to become a STOTT PILATES® instructor.
Topics include:
- Basic biomechanics (levers, effects of gravitational force, effects of muscle force)
- Anatomical terminology
- Skeletal anatomy
- Actions at the joints
- Major muscle groups and the muscles’ origin insertion and action
- Select exercises from the STOTT PILATES repertoire will also be broken down and analyzed with regard to functional anatomy at play. Participants will deepen their understanding of the body and become prepared to enter into the IMP, IR or CMR courses
Learning Objectives:
- Understand levers, effects of gravitational force and effects of muscle force
- Review anatomical terminology
- Review musculoskeletal anatomy
- Review muscle origins, insertions and actions
- Understand how to analyze the functional anatomy of an exercise

STOTT PILATES® Intensive Mat Plus™ – IMP
IMP provides instructors with the foundation and skills needed to develop effective and motivating personal training programs and some group programming skills will also be covered. This course will enable instructors to design and teach the Level 1 (Essential and Intermediate) Matwork repertoire, integrating small equipment to add variety and meet the specific needs of clients.
In addition to the general course objectives, it covers:
- Workout composition for personal sessions and some group classes
- Essential, Intermediate, and Power workouts
- Flex-Band®, Fitness Circle® and Arc Barrel workouts
- Effective communication and observational skills, verbal cueing and imagery for performance enhancement and client motivation
- Modifications for specific body types, postural issues and conditions
- How to incorporate resistance equipment to support and intensify exercises
- Theory and practice of postural analysis
- Exercise layering related to effective program design
- 63 exercises plus multiple modifications
Prerequisites:
- Working knowledge of functional anatomy
- 30 hours of prior pilates classes (We strongly recommend that some of those hours are privates)
- Three-plus years teaching movement or fitness
Duration:
- 40 hours instruction and supervised teaching
- Minimum 10 hours observation
- Minimum 30 hours physical review
- Minimum 15 hours practice teaching
- Conducted over two weeks or three weekends
- Total – 95 hours

STOTT PILATES® Intensive Reformer – IR
This course teaches students how to design and instruct Level 1 (Essential and Intermediate) reformer workouts in personal settings for a range of clients. Some group programming on the reformer is also covered. While IR may be taken prior to IMP, we recommend completing IMP first.
In addition to the general course objectives, this course covers:
- Effective use of the reformer to enhance torso stability and strength, peripheral extremity conditioning, joint stability, flexibility, balance and coordination
- How to develop programs for personal and group sessions and some group classes
- Essential, Intermediate, and Power workouts
- Effective communication and observational skills, verbal cueing and imagery for performance enhancement and client motivation
- Modifications for specific body types, postural issues and conditions
- Theory and practice of postural analysis
- Exercise layering for effective program design
- 122 exercises plus multiple modifications
