Neck & Upper Extremity Series
with Melanie Byford-Young

This intensive weekend series is designed to give instructors practical and theoretical knowledge of the mechanics of the neck and upper extremity. All four sections are designed to build upon each other giving participants a unique opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of the neck and upper extremity in functional movements and client conditions. These workshops are intended for certified pilates instructors with teaching experience.

This four hour practical workshop is designed to give participants an in-depth understanding of the bones, articulations, muscular forces and biomechanics of the cervical spine. Explore the anatomy and biomechanics involved in the normal healthy functioning of the shoulder girdle and discuss some of the interruptions that can occur and exercise progressions to restore optimal function in this lecture/demo. First, the available ROM and typical movement patterns of the shoulder girdle are broken down analyzing scapular movement, humeral movement and relevant muscular action. Next, address some common abnormal or dysfunctional movement patterns. And finally, discover exercise progressions to rebuild normal muscle action and movement patterning as well as shoulder girdle exercises that can challenge and prepare for specific activities and enhance performance.

This three hour lecture demonstration workshop will help participants develop a greater depth of understanding of the information that can be learned from a postural analysis and specifically how it pertains to the shoulder and cervical spine. We will go beyond the basics and examine the interconnections between the regions of the body. Specific pilates exercises and programming pertaining to the findings will be discussed throughout the workshop. Participants must have taken an essential level anatomy and postural analysis prior to enrollment.

It will help instructors with group instruction skills to they can teach group matwork safely while keeping classes upbeat and motivating. It covers how to conduct an orientation class specifically for clients entering group mat classes and includes 10 pre-designed Essential through Intermediate workouts for a group environment. These workouts incorporate small equipment and cover a variety of intensity levels. Following this workshop, instructors are eligible to take the Matwork exam of the Group SPX curriculum. This workshop can also be used to extend an instructor’s exam date by six months.

*$200 tuition fee plus $80.95 in materials (includes mat manual and support materials manual).

This course is designed for instructors who have completed our Intensive or Comprehensive Reformer training.

Enhance your group instruction skills enabling you to safely teach a small group reformer session while keeping the class upbeat and motivating. You will also learn an orientation class designed specifically for clients who are entering group reformer classes. Instructors will leave ready to teach twelve pre-designed Essential through Intermediate workouts in a group environment, as well as a number of plyometric exercises performed on the Jumpboard. Following this course, students are eligible to take the Reformer exam of the Group SPX stream that tests group training knowledge and skills.

(Participants must already have Essential & Intermediate Reformer Manuals and Support Materials Manual).

Lower Extremity Series

All four sections are designed to build upon each other giving participants a unique opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of the hip, knee and ankle in functional movements and client conditions. These workshops are intended for certified pilates instructors with teaching experience.
