Melanie Byford-Young

Melanie Byford-Young (right) is a co-founder of Pacific NW Pilates and a Master Instructor Trainer of Rehabilitation for STOTT PILATES.

Melanie Byford-Young, co-owner of Pacific NW Pilates, helped to revamp the entire internationally based STOTT PILATES Rehabilitation Program in 2007, developing a new instructor curriculum and training materials. You can read Melanie’s full bio here.

Melanie teaches the STOTT PILATES Injuries and Special Populations course and all of the Rehabilitation courses at Pacific NW Pilates. She has also created a series of specialty workshops that are designed to deepen an instructor’s understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, understanding the mechanisms of injury, visual assessment skills, problem solving skills and practical approaches to resolving injury through exercise. Many of these workshops are approved for STOTT PILATES continuing education credits.

Following is a list of those specialty workshops, some of which are already scheduled at Pacific NW Pilates. Or you can bring Melanie to your facility to teach a workshop through our off-site hosting program! For more information, contact us at 503-292-4409 or certification@pacificnwpilates.com.

Explore the anatomy and biomechanics involved in the normal healthy functioning of the shoulder girdle and discuss some of the interruptions that can occur and exercise progressions to restore optimal function in this lecture/demo. First, the available ROM and typical movement patterns of the shoulder girdle are broken down analyzing scapular movement, humeral movement and relevant muscular action. Next, address some common abnormal or dysfunctional movement patterns. And finally, discover exercise progressions to rebuild normal muscle action and movement patterning as well as shoulder girdle exercises that can challenge and prepare for specific activities and enhance performance.

This three hour lecture demonstration workshop will help participants develop a greater depth of understanding of the information that can be learned from a postural analysis and specifically how it pertains to the shoulder and cervical spine. We will go beyond the basics and examine the interconnections between the regions of the body. Specific pilates exercises and programming pertaining to the findings will be discussed throughout the workshop. Participants must have taken an essential level anatomy and postural analysis prior to enrollment.

Finally, challenge yourself and your clients with plyometric and proprioceptive exercises for  return to sport and functional activity. In this workshop, we will look at the kinematics of throwing and overhead activities and use exercise progressions to develop upper body strength, mobility and control.

Lower Extremity Series

This intensive weekend series is designed to give instructors practical and theoretical knowledge of the mechanics of the lower extremity and proficiency in analyzing gait patterns. All four sections are designed to build upon each other giving participants a unique opportunity to develop a comprehensive  understanding of the lower extremity in functional movements and client conditions.

Foot, Knee, Calf

This four hour practical workshop is designed to give participants an in-depth understanding of the bones, articulations and muscular forces acting across the foot and ankle. We will discuss the biomechanics of the foot and ankle and then evaluate normal and abnormal movement patterns. Finally, the workshop will explore how pilates exercises can be used to recognize and address foot and ankle issues.

Knee, Hip

This three hour workshop will focus on the biomechanics of the hip and knee and how they inter-relate with each other. After a brief anatomy review, participants will learn proper axes of movement and joint mechanics, muscle recruitment patterns and how improper mechanics create specific symptoms. All this information will be applied to working with a client in a pilates setting.

See Hosting Fees page for more information.

Gait analysis

This seven hour workshop is divided in two parts. It is highly recommended that both parts be presented together, although the Gait Analysis workshop can be presented as a single workshop. The three hour gait analysis workshop will look at the theory and mechanics involved in gait and running. There will be a formal presentation describing the inter-relationship of the joints and muscles of the lower extremity and spine during gait. Participants will learn the range of motion, strength, and timing of normal gait patterns, as well as discover how gait pattern will be altered by common malalignment and mobility problems. Participants will learn to use gait observation to assist with pilates programming and for assessing the effectiveness of pilates sessions. Anatomy and pilates experience required.

See Hosting Fees page for more information.

Gait Assessment

During the four hour Gait Assessment workshop, participants will practice gait analysis by looking at video clips and assessing individuals in real time. Based on observations, participants will challenge their problem solving skills to determine the causes of gait abnormalities, and pilates programming skills to address each issues. Anatomy and pilates experience required.

Understanding the Anatomy & Biomechanics of the Foot & Lower Leg

This three hour practical workshop is designed to give participants an in-depth understanding of the bones, articulations and muscular forces acting across the foot and ankle. We will discuss the biomechanics of the foot and ankle and then evaluate normal abnormal movement patterns. Finally, the workshop will explore how pilates exercises can be used to recognize and address foot and ankle issues. Anatomy and pilates experience required, ISP recommended.

Knee Stability and Function

This workshop was designed by Melanie Byford-Young for STOTT PILATES in 2007. Presented in a lecture/demo format, it explores the anatomy and biomechanics involved in normal healthy functioning of the knee. Participants will learn about some of the interruptions that can occur and the exercises that can help restore healthy function. It also covers exercise progressions that rebuild normal muscle action and optimal movement patterning.

Matwork for Breast Cancer Rehab

More women will survive breast cancer today than ever before. These women will be encouraged to seek out fitness programs to assist in their recovery and give them the strength and endurance needed to resume an active lifestyle. This workshop will discuss various types of treatments including surgeries and reconstruction and the exercise requirements for each.

The program includes Matwork exercises focused on ROM for the entire shoulder girdle, establishing mobility, restoring posture, ensuring proper biomechanics and developing core and peripheral strength to address muscular imbalances created from surgery. Exercises will incorporate hand-held toning balls and a towel or small foam cushion to work on low-load strength and endurance.
