STOTT PILATES® Group SPX™ Program
for Fitness Professionals
These programs are for fitness facility owners, managers and program directors who want to implement quality, profitable group pilates programs quickly and effectively. Composed of Level 1 (Essential and Intermediate) STOTT PILATES courses and workshops, Group SPX Programs are designed to provide pilates teachers with the core skills to teach mat and reformer classes.
Group SPX Mat-Plus™ Training (GM)
This course is designed specifically for instructors who teach in a group environment. Taught in two modules, instructors learn skills to conduct safe group mat classes with energy and effective cueing techniques at the Essential and Intermediate levels. Instructors are eligible to take the certification exam once they have successfully completed both modules 1 (Essential) and 2 (Intermediate).
Upon completion of this course, instructors may take a crossover workshop This workshop is designed for instructors who have already taken the Group SPX Mat-Plus course and want to move seamlessly from a group training environment to working with private clients.
In addition to the general course objectives, this course covers:
- How to conduct an orientation session that promotes group Matwork or Mat-Plus™ classes to first time clients
- Ten group matwork routines (Essential through Intermediate) integrating small equipment (flex-bands®, fitness circles® and STOTT PILATES toning balls) with a variety of intensity levels
- Motivation and observation skills, as well as verbal cueing and imagery specific to group training
- Standard modifications to help the trainer deal with different students in the same class
- Form and functional anatomy involved in each exercise
- More than 57 exercises plus multiple modifications
Prerequisites:
- Working knowledge of functional anatomy
- 30 hours of pilates general fitness classes(these do not have to be
STOTT PILATES classes) - Three-plus years teaching movement or fitness
Duration:
40 hours instruction and supervised teaching (Module 1 is 25 hours, Module 2 is 15 hours).
After each 15-hour or 10-hour segment we recommend:
- Minimum 3 hours of observation
- Minimum 5 hours practice teaching
- Minimum 10 hours physical review

Group SPX™ Reformer Training (GR)
This course is specifically designed for trainers who teach in a group environment. Composed of two modules, it will provide instructors with the skills to conduct safe group SPX reformer classes at Essential and Intermediate levels with energy and effective cueing techniques. Instructors are eligible to take the certification exam once they have successfully completed both modules 1 and 2. Upon completion of both modules, instructors may take a crossover workshop . This workshop is designed for instructors who have already taken the Group SPX™ Reformer course and want to learn the nuances of one-on-one reformer training.
In addition to these general objectives, this course covers:
- How to conduct an orientation session to promote Group Reformer classes to new clients
- Effective use of the reformer to enhance torso stability and strength, peripheral extremity conditioning, joint stability, flexibility, balance and coordination
- Twelve group reformer programs (Essential through Intermediate) with a variety of intensity levels
- Motivation and observation skills, as well as verbal cueing and imagery specific to group classes
- Standard modifications to help the instructor deal with different students in the class
- Form and functional anatomy involved in each exercise
- More than 120 Essential and Intermediate level exercises including warm-ups and plyometric exercises using the STOTT PILATES Jumpboard, plus multiple modifications

- Three-plus years teaching movement or fitness
Duration:
50 hours of instruction, including supervised teaching (Module 1 is 30 hours,
Module 2 is 20 hours)
After each 15-hour or 10-hour segment we recommend:
- Minimum 3 hours of observation
- Minimum 7 hours practice teaching
- Minimum 10 hours physical review
