Deliberate Practice

At Pacific NW Pilates (PNWP) we know that little things make a big difference. The words we choose to explain movement, the care we take to guide the body, and the way we demonstrate an exercise matter. At PNWP we encourage deliberative practice: not just doing movement again and again. We train your body and mind to go just beyond your current ability, we encourage you to try, explore, analyze and correct mistakes. Then repeat. And repeat again.

The program’s pre-selected exercises provide participants with the foundation, skills and body awareness to progress through the basic mat and reformer essential exercises. Each class builds upon the prior one—exercises will be reviewed, practiced and perfected. You’ll gain the awareness, strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance to move confidently to the next level.

Sound Principles & Training

The training at PNWP is based on well-founded principles about movement and the human body. PNWP instructors are certified STOTT PILATES instructors educated to incorporate modern theories of exercise science through five basic principles—breathing, pelvic placement, ribcage placement, shoulder blade movement/stabilization and head and neck placement. Once students have learned the basic principles, they’re woven into every class—like little reminders—to help students build awareness and integrate better movement habits into every exercise.

Education: A Cornerstone of Self-Sufficiency

It takes time to learn a new skill and become proficient. The Pilates Fundamentals series will give you the tools, time and attention to learn Pilates mat and reformer from the ground up. You won’t just see an exercise once and be expected to do it perfectly. Your instructors will break down every exercise, provide guidance every step of the way, help you you discover why a modification or adjustment may be right for you, and teach you to gain the skills to become more independent.

We know we’ve done our job when you know how to make adjustments, correct yourself, and know the difference between pain and muscle fatigue.
