Group Class FAQ
What classes do you offer?
A. Pacific NW Pilates offers private and semi-private sessions and group classes. You can read about all our classes here. All classes and sessions are one hour long unless stated otherwise. Private sessions are for people who want personalized workouts, semi-private sessions are geared for two people (a couple or two friends) interested in working out together. Group classes are available at our studio every day, Monday through Saturday. Group class sizes are limited (for example, equipment-based classes are limited to just four people), so students must sign up in advance. We require every student who is new to our studio to take at least one private session and be approved by an instructor before they will be admitted into a group class. This helps ensure the safety of our students and maintains the correct pacing of the group classes.
How to I get started?
A. We require all students to begin with at least one private session. This will include a general physical assessment with postural analysis and introduce the student to the basic STOTT PILATES principles and exercises. After this first session, the instructor will recommend a program or class that is most suitable and beneficial for the student. Class packages are available that include a discount for this initial private session.
What is a Pilates session like?
A. A typical private or semi-private Pilates session will incorporate exercises using mats and equipment. Group classes can be conducted on mats, using other accessories such as balls, circles or therabands. Group classes are also conducted on equipment, such as the Reformer. All private sessions or group classes focus on the basic principles of breathing, spinal alignment, shoulder placement and deep abdominal connections. Beginning students will learn how to apply these principles to basic-level exercises with mats or equipment. Once the basic movements and related vocabulary have been mastered, students can take on more demanding exercises with ease, coordination and fluidity.
How many times a week should I do Pilates?
A. This varies depending on your goals. Generally, two to three times per week is recommended. The consistency of doing pilates several times per week will definitely help you to learn the method more quickly and effectively.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
A. Individuals maintaining a consistent pilates program generally experience many health benefits including longer, leaner muscles, more freedom of movement, improved posture, increased strength and muscle tone, fewer incidents of injury, more flexibility and, in many cases, less joint and back pain.
What should I wear? Do I need to bring supplies?
A. It is best to wear clothing that is comfortable enough to allow for freedom of movement, but not too baggy so your instructor can visually check your movements and correct you as needed. Most people prefer to wear sweatpants or yoga-style fitness apparel instead of shorts. You may wear socks or go bare foot during your class or session, but you will not need to wear shoes. We supply all mats and other equipment you need for a workout. However, you may bring your own mat or a towel if you want.
What are the benefits of taking Pilates at a studio vs. a gym?
A. The most important things to take into consideration when deciding where to take pialtes is class size and instructor training. At Pacific NW Pilates, our class sizes are limited to 10 people for STOTT PILATES mat classes, five people for reformer classes, and four people for V2 Max reformer classes. This allows our instructors to provide constant personal feedback to students about their form, which is essential for safe, effective workouts. All of our pilates instructors have been trained and certified in the internationally recognized STOTT PILATES methodology, which is based on a very specific and rigorous educational curriculum. They also take continuing education courses each year to maintain their certification.
Who is the best instructor for me to work with?
A. Every instructor at our studio has been trained or hand-picked by our co-owners and Instructor Trainers, who train STOTT PILATES instructors around the world. You can check out their bios for more information about individual instructors. If you have specific goals or issues you’d like to address with your fitness routine, please let us know. We may be able to make a suggestion about an instructor with specific related experience.
I’ve done other types of exercise and usually I find them too hard for me. How is Pilates different?
A. We teach STOTT PILATES, which is designed to be safe and effective for people of all ages and fitness levels. It is not a one-size-fits-all methodology. Our instructors are specifically trained to adapt and modify hundreds of exercises and techniques to accommodate the needs and goals of individual clients with different body types and fitness aspirations. The STOTT PILATES method has been – and continues to be – advanced with input from sports medicine specialists, physical rehabilitation professionals and fitness experts. It incorporates the most up-to-date research and approaches related to spinal alignment, joint stabilization and core work for maximum results without injury or over-exertion.
