Singing and Pilates

by Leslie Braverman on December 17, 2008

Hi Leslie,

I didn’t want to forget to tell you I asked Darcy about Pilates breathing vs. singing breathing. She used to be there on Mondays but now has semi-privates on Thursday so I don’t think you’d see her.

Darcy said Pilates breathing and singing breathing is the same except for some funneling of the ribs. So there is some rib stuff, but otherwise it’s the same. Darcy Dillon teaches the Thomas Blaylock Method and it’s made a huge difference for my voice, but it also made it easier for me to understand Pilates breathing.

I saw someone slide down my street in the wrong direction this morning so it’s not too good out there. But I am practicing my homework.

take care,

Cynthia

Thanks, Cynthia. I am glad you are warm and safe at home.A a few brave souls taken class with me today, otherwise it’s pretty quiet here. Thanks for the info on singing and pilates- very interesting.

Best, Leslie

As a dancer, now solely Pilates Instructor, I love to hear the music as well. I tend to play soulful female artists such as Bebel Gilberto, Dianna Reeves and Corrine Bailey Rae. I do find that my older clientel cannot hear when the music is playing so I turn to a quieter studio when they are present.

As I read these comments an additional thought came to mind. Take a deep breath standing with the legs together vs legs apart. I was once in a pain class where the instructor had 12 women stand in front of the class and asked the women who had chronic pain. Every women who raised her hand stood with their legs together. The conclusion is that you cannot get a full breath with legs together due to tightening down of the dural and fascial system. Try and see for yourself!
